Essex has a lot to offer businesses and start-ups. In total, the number of registered companies in Essex was 119,806 in July 2023, a slight drop from 2021.
The proximity of Essex to the nation’s capital allows unique opportunities for businesses. Situated to the north east of London, businesses in Essex can take advantage of this connection or, Harwich International Port which connects Essex to The Netherlands.
Colchester is Britain’s oldest recorded town and was Britain’s first capital city in Roman times. During medieval times it was famed for its wool trade, with the Dutch Quarter developing the industry between 1550 and 1600. The Co-op retail chain was founded in 1861 and is now the biggest independent retail chain in the UK.
Clinton Cards was founded in 1968 when Don Lewin OBE opened his first shop in Epping, Essex. The business grew to 77 shops by 1988 and was then successfully floated on the London Stock Exchange. He said: “It was a great day. Ever since I was a child my ultimate ambition had been to own a Rolls-Royce. I felt I had arrived.” There was just one problem: he now needed a new challenge. So he set himself the target of making a huge amount of money. He said: “You always need a goal in life.”
Lewin was born in the East End of London, the son of a chimney sweep. From the age of 10 he worked in the markets to earn pocket money. On Saturdays he sold lead toy soldiers and on Sundays he sold dogs bred by a neighbour. He said: “My father never gave me any money. He used to say that if I wanted any money, I had to go and earn it.” Sounds like that was Don’s first taste of a mentor!
