Business landscape in Staffordshire

There are a total of 26,680 businesses registered on Companies House in Staffordshire. However, this does not tell you that there has been a significant increase in ‘knowledge’ businesses in the county.

Staffordshire Moorlands Council released a report that stated that the number of professional, managerial and technical workers rose from 28% to 58% between 2016 and 2021.

The level of ‘knowledge workers’ is possibly a reason the county remained resilient during the pandemic. In turn, the county only had a 9.64% closure rate compared to the average in England of 10.65%.

Overall, Staffordshire is a resilient county with a business landscape investing in knowledge-based businesses.

Renowned businesses

The location of Staffordshire in the middle of England has allowed it to develop strong ties to the rest of the country. Subsequently, a number of national businesses have made the Midlands county their home.

  • Branston Pickle: Developed in Branston, the famous condiment is a British favourite invented in 1922 by Crosse & Blackwell. Although it kept the name, production was moved out of the village in 1927.

  • Marmite: Another British food started production in Burton-on-Trent in 1902. The small factory is still in operation today.

  • Marston’s Brewery: The pub and hotel chain was founded by John Marston in 1834 in Burton-on-Trent. Now they own six breweries in the UK.

  • Bet365: The online gambling company’s international headquarters have been in Stoke-on-Trent since its establishment in 2000.

Find business mentors across the Midlands

From time to time, we may refer you to a mentor in one of Staffordshire’s neighbouring counties if your local business mentors are at full capacity or if we feel an alternative mentor would provide a stronger match for your specific needs, or if it works better for you logistically.
