Resilience – business, business owner or both?

When we refer to resilience, we often refer to a person showing resilience in a particular situation. But what about the resilience of a business?

The way we speak about resilience is often as an emotion. However if you enter ‘resilience’ into a web browser the first definition is business related: ‘The capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness’.

So, where to start with achieving a resilient business?

Whether you are a start-up business, SME or large corporate, the starting point is the business model. Which can be referred to as the how and why the business is doing what it does.

A business model is often one of the first things to be detailed when starting a business. However it is somehow lost further down the line.

When I am mentoring businesses across Berkshire, I start by asking questions around the business model and compare with what was originally outlined. The objective for this exercise is not to criticise. Nor to pinpoint steps where the business has moved in a different direction from the starting thought. But any deviations are actually signs of resilience and should be captured. In the very early stages of business when most of the decisions will be made by the business owner, any changing course is resilience of the business as well as the business owner.

There are many ways to run a successful business

And there are many guides as to what to do. However what I find is looking within the business you wish to build and ensuring resilience is captured and celebrated. This happens over time and with a Business Mentor by your side, you can ensure an extra source of innovation and support which will aid your resilience.

I invite you to make use of a complimentary mentoring session

Where we will start by discussing your business model and look at what you wish to achieve. There is no obligation to proceed and no lengthy contracts – every solution will be tailored to you and your business.
