The gravy train – are you on board?

SME (Small and medium Enterprises) businesses are forever chasing this vision, but the majority never quite seem to make it. They can see the train in the distance but, every time they get close and business is growing it seems to pull away yet again. Snaking off in the distance with all their dreams and ambitions.

Business owners are without doubt trying hard to take their businesses forward and continue to grow, but the majority are not experienced at growing businesses. I know this because I have been there, growing my own businesses in the past prior to becoming a Business Mentor. Most business owners are experienced in trades they have learnt or skills they have acquired. They set up their businesses with the confidence they have taken from becoming good at something. This will generally work well for a few years until they just can’t seem to go any further. This flatlining is precisely the right time for them to make changes. Those changes are both to themselves and the businesses. The scaling of the business means the owners are ready to take the next step. Move on from the comfort of what they have built to explore the next phase.

Think back to when you first started out, it was the self-belief in the talents you had that got you going. The thing is if you want growth you need to learn a whole new set of skills. Your path is to steer the business, to be the person who motivates the others in your team to go on the journey with you. They will feel the change in you, they will pick up on all the new things the business is doing and flourish with it. There will always be resistance to change, but dealing with that in a professional way is part of your remit now and that’s where engaging with external help such as a Business Mentor comes in.

There are always successful businesses where the owners have through conscious thought or unconscious skills adapted and moved with the changing world to elevate their businesses. However, most of us will need some form of assistance from those that have been there before. The value a good Business Mentor can bring is right up there with other priorities for growth. Business owners and in particular female owners, are waking up to the opportunities this powerful extension to your business can bring. I wish I had invested in a business mentor in my early years, I thought I knew it all, I didn’t need any help I have always managed well on my own. Besides that, corporate language wasn’t for me that’s what big companies do isn’t it? Well, let me let you into a little secret, a good business mentor will talk your language, will quickly get to the reasons why you need support, then help plan a route. Could be sales and marketing, leadership skills, your time management, financials, management structure, or just wanting to sell your business. So that Gravy train really can become a reality reach out and start to make changes, you really can do it.

Toot toot all aboard!!

If you would like to discuss how to get your business on the train then please get in touch. I offer a complimentary mentoring session so that you can experience how it feels to have the benefit of another pair of eyes viewing your business.
