How a cup of tea can change your life

Before becoming a Business Mentor, I remember a cold and miserable Monday morning in January when I arrived at the office. Business had been ok, in fact business had been ok for the past 5 years. But today was going to be different. I went through the normal motions various emails, meeting with Managers, phone calls. The things that matter to our customers there and then but really had absolutely no connection with where I wanted to take the business. Yet as an owner manager that is how I spent a lot of my time. Working on things that others could perform as well probably better than I could. For I was under the illusion that working hard automatically meant success. Well, it certainly helps but the caveat I would add here is working smart simultaneously is just as important.

Crunching on a chocolate digestive and gulping down a mouthful of tea, it hit me like a bolt from the blue. I was a 29-year-old bursting with energy revelling in the fact that I ran my own business. But for all of that I was a slave to it, I had a marriage coming and children would soon follow. I had big plans when I had started, great ambitions, but we never seemed to be getting there as quickly as I had hoped. I was throwing everything at the business my life had been consumed by it. That was it!! the business was now going to be working for me and the lifestyle I wanted not the other way around.

That is when the real adventure started, I read books, I went on various courses invested in sales and marketing. I wanted to re-educate myself and fast. I tried to mop up as much information as I could to be able to make those decisions to fulfil the vision. And you know what? it really worked. Some 25 years later I can sit here sharing this story with you because I made changes. I was able to focus on what needed changing in the business for growth. More successful meant a growing business with great people sharing my vision, seeing my kids grow up and having a comfortable lifestyle. Reaching my target age of 55 last year and being able to choose how I spend the next 10 years of my working life.

Which brings me full circle, the rain is hammering down outside it’s a cold dark December day in Sevenoaks Kent. I have a cup of tea with a couple of tasty looking chocolate digestives in front of me. This time though my past has prepared me, I choose to share all that I have learnt to become a Business Mentor. To help others determine their future and scale their businesses.

I would be delighted to share my experience with you and help you take your business to the next level – please get in touch for a complimentary mentoring session – tea and chocolate hob nobs on me 🙂
