A Board in your business is not only a group of people sitting round a table discussing business plans and numbers –
It is your support network so whatever the size of your business it is valuable to consider who you include in your Board. These do not have to be people who have an actual stake in your company or work for you, but can be people among your peers, family, friends or even a business mentor. You will most probably occupy one of these seats – do you understand which one is yours and is it your key strength as a leader?
The roles to be occupied for a healthy Board structure are:
The Friend (the support who is there no matter what)
The Champion (the one always rooting for you and your business)
The Inspiration (can change perception)
The Challenger (asks difficult questions)
The Connector (the one who introduces you to a wider network)
The Strategiser (thinks ahead & plans)
And finally – The Courage (gives you confidence)
A (sounding) Board does not have to cost money but that should never stop you from getting the most out of it as there will be some investment at some point – if not money then more likely to be time which is just as precious.
Through mentoring, clients have at times suddenly realised an over-reliance on one person; is this the same for you and your business? The importance of having a sound support network cannot be underestimated so this is a worthwhile exercise to undertake. And ensure you are using people to their best abilities…as you would if you were paying people to fill the roles officially.
A business mentor can fill any spare position within your Board. To discover how, feel free to take up the offer of a complimentary mentoring session to experience the benefits mentoring brings.
